Summer entertainment in Tavira

With the fados of Raquel Tavares and the eclectic rhythms of Mayra Andrade, Tavira will buzzing in the month of August. The strong voice of Raquel Tavares will be filling the Fábrica Balsense in Tavira on 1st August at 10.30 pm. On 12th August at the same time it will be the turn of the sweet voice of Mayra Andrade to present her latest album “Stória stória”. Raquel Tavares was born in Lisbon in 1985 and she started singing fado when she was just 6, in groups in the small restaurants of Alfama.

In 2006, she was awarded the Amália Rodrigues Revelation Prize and she has excelled both in Portugal and abroad with tours to France, Italy, Spain and Chile, among others.

Raquel Tavares’ latest work “Bairro” is based on Alfama and it depicts a series of key moments in the fado singer’s musical career. To find out more about the singer, click here.

Mayra Andrade, the daughter of Cape Verdean parents, was born in Cuba. She grew up in Senegal, Angola, Cape Verde and Germany and she has been living in France since 2003.

With her sweet voice and Cape Verdean roots, the music of Mayra Andrade reflects the experiences of the singer’s life as it combines jazz, Afro and Brazilian rhythms. Find out more here.

Night-time entertainment extended to other venues in the city

Entertaining the summer evenings there will also be daily open-air shows in the amphitheatre in the Praça da República, and the programme Tavira Summer Sessions until 29th August with activities from 10 pm to 5 am in the “Docas de Tavira” (Municipal Market).

From music to fairs

The summer programme in Tavira also includes a cycle of four fairs in the Rua do Cais and the Jardim do Coreto until 6th September.

Until 2nd August, visitors will find the Book Fair from 8 pm to half past midnight, with the presence of 15 booksellers representing 51 publishing houses.

From 5th to 13th August, from 7.30 pm to half past midnight, the Fair of Crafts will be taking place. On 8th at 7 pm, the event will be organising a fashion show “Saberes na Passarelle”.

From 15th to 23rd August, there will be a Fair of Bric-a-Brac and Antiques which will include the presence of antique dealers from different parts of the country. The aim of the fair is to present and sell pieces to collectors or other interested people and it can be visited from Sunday to Thursday from 7 pm to midnight, and on Friday and Saturday from 7 pm to 1 am.

From 25th to 30th August, it will be the turn of the Disc Fair (CDs and vinyl). A place to acquire, exchange or sell discs. Antiques, novelties, special editions and other phonographic rarities will all be available. The fair will be open on 25th August from 9 pm to 1 am; from 26th to 29th August from 7 pm to 1 am; and on 30th August from 7 to 11 pm.

Bringing the series to an end, Tavira will be hosting the first Stock Clearance Fair, on 5th and 6th September from 6 to 11 pm in the Jardim do Coreto.
